Developmental editing has been perfectly defined by Alan Ritzler*:
“…the process of identifying and revising weaknesses in the story, characterization, and literary style of the manuscript, whether the work is fiction, narrative nonfiction, history, biography, memoir, how-to, or any other form of writing. Specifically, a good developmental editor suggests significant, if not critical, changes…”
“…isn’t at all the same as copyediting, which focuses on correcting spelling, punctuation, grammar, and sometimes includes fact-checking”.
